Anger Technique #2: What if people are in your home, and you don't feel you can stand and push against a wall? Another great option is to clean your house. Cleaning your house does several things. One, it gives you a sense of control - a place to direct your energy. Two, it requires constant movement, so the epinephrine/adrenaline can release from your body. Three, it requires very little brain effort, so you can process while you work. Four, it gives you a sense of satisfaction upon completion. All of these things can help ease your anger, and reduce your odds of hurting someone else.

Understanding Anger

Have you ever felt that your anger was much larger than the incident that caused it? That is because you did not address your anger from a previous situation. Now, this is often normal in our society, because you were probably told NOT to feel or express your anger. Anger, however, does not just disappear. Have you ever noticed that when you think back even years on an incident that may you really angry, you still get the same response. This is the nature of the emotion of anger. Normally we feel justified in being angry, so anger doesn't just go away with time.

Anger is an emotion that needs to be addressed. Although distraction techniques can be effective for other emotions, anger is not one of them. Pretending you are not angry, or distracting yourself from your feelings does not help them to go away. That only delays those emotions, buries them deeper, and can create an 'explosion' later. Either that, or you begin to become a bitter and resentful person as the years pass bye.

Anger is a kinetic emotion that needs to be physically released. It causes an increase in blood flow and adrenaline which can trigger a person to explode or become out of control. By choosing to access your anger from a moment of calmness, you can gain greater control over releasing your anger.

Begin with a simple exercise such as pushing against a wall. You then want to get your blood moving (before you think of what makes you angry). This gives you a greater sense of control. Then think of something you are angry about. As you feel your anger, that anger can then be ‘pushed’ out of the body and expressed, while the chemicals (epinephrine/adrenaline) are released from the tissues without hurting anyone including yourself.

At the point of exhaustion, you may begin to cry. This is the pain or fear that was hidden underneath your anger. Allow yourself to cry and express your emotions in private. You then can find a calmer way to interact with others. This process also supports you to release old anger that has been stored from experiences you did not know how to previously handle. It helps you to find a more positive inner space.
