HOW WORRY IMPACTS EMOTIONS and WORRY RELEASE TECHNIQUE

Worry

Worry is an emotion that shows up when we do not have control over a situation. It is your most useless emotion, because it does not produce any positive results, and is also drains what energy resources you do have so that you feel exhausted and non-productive.

Since worry is about being out of control, one effective method is to focus your energy on projects where you have total control - like organizing a closet, planting flowers, or doing simple projects. You want to keep the project very simple, because worry uses a lot of 'mental' energy. It can make decision making very difficult.  Choose something you can do without thinking very much, like laundry, washing dishes, or sweeping your back deck. The goal isn't thinking, it is giving your emotional body a sense of control. You want to begin and complete a project, and at the end look at the completed project with a sense of accomplishment.

Another effective ways to deal with worry is distraction. Although distraction does not work for most other emotions, it is highly effective when it comes to worry. Again, because worry is caused by a lack of control over a situation, distracting yourself helps prevent the emotional drain that worry causes. Make yourself think about other things. Watch a movie. Listen to your favorite music.

Worry, like anger, tells the body that you are in danger, and so triggers the release of epinephrine in your body. The surge is much slower and smaller, because worry tells the body to be on alert. Worry tells the body there is danger, but not immediate danger. So instead of a strong rapid burst of adrenaline, it is a smaller steady stream of hormones that act upon the body, breaking it down. For this reason, exercise is essential in releasing the imbalance of hormones from the tissues of your body. Because the hormonal flow is slower and smaller, worry can be released by calming, soothing exercises like yoga, gentle walks, and strong stretches - versus the intense exercises required to release anger.

If worry goes unaddressed long enough (without exercising to release it from the body) it will often result in anger, or an angry explosion. This is because of the hormonal build-up in the body. The body needs a release, your mind needs a release, and your heart needs a release. Give yourself what you need through moderate consistent yoga or walking, and you can help prevent those angry outbursts.

Worry Technique #1: Because worry runs in circles, it is essential to find a distraction exercise to release it from the body. One great option is to organize a closet, clean out a drawer, or compile papers or photo albums. First, organizing gives you a sense of control -which helps you calm down. Secondly, it requires you to focus on something other than your problem, so it is a very effective distraction technique.  Third, it requires moderate movement, so the epinephrine/adrenaline can release from your body. Fourth, it gives you a sense of satisfaction. All of these things can help ease your worry, lower your stress, and reduce your odds of exploding in anger at somepoint.
